Trogenerbahn AG was owned by the federal government (37.2%), the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden , the municipalities of St. Gallen , Speicher and Trogen passed through and private individuals (3.7%).

history

Terminal station Trogen, 2009

The company was founded as the St. Gallen – Speicher – Trogen tram on July 26, 1900 in Trogen. On July 10, 1903, the company was able to open the St. Gallen – Trogen railway line ; the day before, a stagecoach ran between St. Gallen and Trogen for the last time . On October 30, 1909, the Federal Assembly granted the Trogenerbahn the license to extend it to Heiden and Walzenhausen . However, this remained unused and has now expired.

The line was initially electrified with 750 volts DC . The initiators were of the opinion that running a side business for the distribution of electrical energy would have a positive impact on the railways' finances. As a result, the construction of a pipeline network began in the autumn of 1900 and as early as 1901 incandescent lamps were working in the storage facilities and troughs. In addition, an installation and electrical specialist shop was set up from 1904. The ancillary business was initially spun off into a subsidiary Elektro Speicher-Trogen AG (EST) in 2001 and the corporate purpose of “building and operating systems for the supply of electrical energy to third parties and electrical installation businesses” was deleted from the articles of association. In March 2006, before the merger, EST was sold to the municipalities of Speicher (45%), Trogen (35%) and the city of St. Gallen (20%) with a profit of 1.5 million Swiss francs. These in turn were sold by EST on October 1, 2011 to St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG (SAK), which EST merged into its own company in February 2013.

In mid-1991 the Trogenerbahn withdrew from direct wagonload traffic, and since then the freight wagons have only been used for mail and own transport. The mail transport survived the merger for another year.

For the maintenance of the vehicles, the company operated a workshop in Speicher, which also housed the administration and electronics shop. After the merger, the building was still used by the Appenzeller Bahnen for vehicle maintenance and removal.
