Concord Pacific Place

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Concord Pacific Place was the name of a temporary racetrack in Vancouver , Canada .

From 1990 to 2004, the Molson Indy Vancouver was held on the street circuit as part of the Champ Car series . The last winner here was Paul Tracy in 2004 . After sponsor Molson withdrew from the Champ Car series, no more races in the series took place at Concord Pacific Place after 2004.

history

The course was designed around the BC Place Stadium . In the inaugural race on September 2, 1990, the course was 1.704  miles long. Over the years, small corrections were made to the route so that its length always varied a little, but was always around 1.7 miles. In 1998 the course was redesigned. Only a small part of the course from 1990 was taken over into the new layout. The two relatively narrow hairpin bends , which often caused accidents and traffic jams , were also eliminated . From 1999 the chicane on the back straight in front of the start and finish line was relocated in order to improve the overtaking opportunities on the narrow track. In its final form, the course was then 2.87 km (1.781 miles) long in 2004.

In addition to the view of the 60,000-seat BC Place Stadium , the course was also characterized by the fact that it had to pass under the elevated streets of Vancouver several times. In the changed route from 1998, almost 50% of the course was near the bank of False Creek . The stadium parking lot was used as the paddock . Another alternative parking lot was then also used from 1998 for the new southern part of the course.

statistics

The most successful driver on the Canadian street circuit was Al Unser Jr. with four wins. But both Michael Andretti and the local Paul Tracy could celebrate three wins each.
