Stuart Jeffrey Randall Baron Randall of St Budeaux, (* 22. June 1938 in Plymouth , † 11. August 2012 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party .

life and career

Randall was born on June 22, 1938, the son of a teacher in Plymouth . He attended Plymouth Technical Secondary School .

Initially he worked as an electrician in a shipyard in Plymouth. He later rose to be a manager. Randall studied at the University College in Cardiff Electrical Engineering ( Electrical Engineering ) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science from.

He was twenty years in the electronics industry operates and Chairman ( Chairman ) of ACWI Ltd and the The Genesis Initiative .

In 1966 he joined the Labor Party . In the October 1974 general election , he stood unsuccessfully for the constituency of South Worcestershire . In 1979 he ran for the constituency of Midlands West in the 1979 European elections . In 1981 Randall was named as the designated successor to House of Commons James Johnson .

Membership in the House of Commons

Randall was a Member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Hull West from 1983 to 1997. He was from 1984 to 1985 Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Roy Hattersley as deputy chairman ( Deputy Leader ) of the Labor Party and shadow treasure chancellor . He held several positions as spokesman ( Front Bench Spokesman ): 1985 to 1987 for agriculture, fisheries and food, from 1987 to 1992 for home affairs.

He considered himself a Christian socialist. His political views were considered moderate.

In the 1980s, he spoke to the Isle of Man , hyperactive children, Lebanon, and the Falkland Islands . In the 1990s he spoke out on border controls, people with disabilities, the Maastricht Treaty and the Security Service Bill.

For family reasons, he did not run for the 1997 general election , but resigned shortly before. In doing so, he made it impossible for his party in the constituency to nominate its preferred candidate. The seat went to unionist Alan Johnson . Previously there had been internal differences in the constituency.

Membership in the House of Lords

Randall was named Life Peer as Baron Randall of St Budeaux, of St Budeaux in the County of Devon on September 25, 1997 . The official introduction to the House of Lords took place on October 14, 1997 with the assistance of Stanley Clinton Davis and Denis Howell, Baron Howell . He gave his inaugural address on November 5, 1997 on the subject of environmental protection. He cites information technology as topics of political interest. He named the USA and France as states of particular interest on the House of Lords website .

He hosted the annual JTL National Awards, which took place in the House of Lords (as of 2005). He was also a member of the Digital Policy Alliance.

In 1998 he caused a stir when he spoke out in support of hereditary peers (hereditary peers) and against their exclusion. He also spoke about Iraq , police dogs, Montserrat and EU funding in the late 1990s . In the 2000s, he spoke up on manufacturing, agricultural revenue, small business, and social security. He last spoke up on July 8, 2003. He last took part in a vote on October 24, 2007.

His presence on meeting days was initially in the medium to high range, but decreased significantly in the 2007/2008 session. In the following years he was no longer present. Since January 23, 2008 and again from June 22, 2010 he was on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords .

Working in public

In 2004, Randall was positive about the quality of Broker's Gin and its presentation.

He was chairman ( Chairman ) in the Genesis Initiative under the presidency of Michael Windsor for a survey, which should determine the views of small business to general business conditions.

Randall was a member of the Information Society Alliance EURIM. In May 2000 he stood there for election as director.

Family and death

Randall married Gillian Michael in 1963; together they have three daughters. He died on August 11, 2012 at the age of 74.
