The stubby weaver or stubby wida ( Euplectes axillaris ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of fire weavers ( Euplectes ).
features
The stubby weaver is about 15 cm tall and weighs 26–32 g, the female is slightly lighter. The bird has a strong, conical, light gray beak, black eyes and dark legs. The male has orange-red shoulders with a cream-colored edge, is black in its splendid dress . The tail is only fanned out for a show flight, which is often shown from the reed tips. In a simple dress he is ocher-colored like the female, with light stripes over the eyes, blackish, ocher-colored stripes on the top.
distribution and habitat
The habitat includes highly overgrown grasslands , often in humid or swampy areas, including reeds and papyrus from sea level to 2300 m.

- E. a. phoeniceus ( Heuglin , 1862) - Sudan , Uganda , Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda , Burundi , Kenya and Tanzania , Zambia and Malawi
- E. a. traversii ( Salvadori , 1888) - Highlands of Ethiopia
- E. a. zanzibaricus ( Shelley , 1881) - Somalia along the coast including Zanzibar and Pemba
- E. a. axillary ( Smith , 1838) - lowlands in Malawi, Mozambique , Swaziland, and South Africa
nutrition
Stummelwida feed on seeds such as millet , fingergrass , sweetgrass, bluegrass, and knotweed .
Reproduction
The breeding season in West Africa is between September and October, in Sudan in August, in Ethiopia between September and October and in Somalia between August and October.
Hazardous situation
The stump wida is not considered endangered ( least concern ).
