The Stumpfe Turm is a historical monument in the Hunsrück . It is located directly on the Hunsrückhöhenstraße ( Bundesstraße 327 ) and the Bundesstraße 50 / Europastraße 42 that joins here and runs parallel for a short distance .

It stands on a ridge (not on the main ridge) of the Idarwald , which extends in the southeast and is separated from it by the depression of the Dhron, which is still “young” here , at an altitude of about 560  m above sea level. NHN .

To the north-west, the ridge drops only slightly at first , but becomes more and more steep towards the valley of the Moselle . The Stumpfe Turm is located in the Hinzerath district , a part of the community -free community Morbach in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The Belginum archeology park is located near the tower on the former Roman Ausoniusstrasse from Trier to Bingen am Rhein .

History and description

The tower was built in the first quarter of the 14th century around 1315 together with Baldenau Castle , with which the tower is in visual contact. While the castle in Dhrontal is located, was from the apparently as Wacht- or watchtower to the surrounding mountain ranges and valleys possible built tower a more distant view. Together with the castle, it served to secure the border of the Electoral State of Trier under the rule of Archbishop Balduin von Trier .

The round tower has a diameter of about six meters and a height of about ten meters. Like Baldenau Castle, it is built from the slate that occurs on site . The now ruinous tower (there is a pronounced gap in the masonry) cannot be climbed. An outside inspection is possible at any time.

The legend of the two unequal sons is entwined around the tower.
