Suicide is the influential first studio album by the American duo Suicide , released in December 1977. It is often referred to as one of the earliest synth pop albums, although it has a distinct punk and industrial bias in contrast to many well-known albums in the mainstream synth pop genre . In addition, Suicide is counted among the key albums of the experimental No Wave direction and pioneered the music of New Wave and Minimal Electro .

The debut album ranks 441 in the selection of the 500 best albums of all time by the music magazine Rolling Stone . The New Musical Express voted it 236 of the 500 best albums. Pitchfork Media ranks it # 39 on the Top 100 Albums of the 1970s. Suicide was included in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die .

The song Frankie Teardrop is included in Nick Hornby's 2002 book 31 songs , and it appeared in Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film In a Year with 13 Moons from 1978. The song Cheree is included in the final scene of Downtown 81 in which the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat took part. The song Girl appeared briefly in Nick Zedd's 1979 film They Eat Scum. The song Ghost Rider is featured in the 2006 video game Driver: Parallel Lines and also appeared in True Crime: New York City .

From the song Ghost Rider u. a. REM , The Horrors , The Gories, Rollins Band , Loop, The Sisters of Mercy , The Cassandra Complex , Merzbow , Soft Cell and The Young Gods made a cover version , and it was also used in a Brazilian deodorant advertisement from 2005. It was also sampled for MIA's 2010 single Born Free . In September 2009 the entire album was performed live as part of the Don't Look Back series arranged by All Tomorrow's Parties . It will be performed again in London in May 2010, where the duo will support the Stooges in the performance of Raw Power .
