Susanne Hauser (cultural scientist)

Susanne Hauser (* 1957 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German cultural scientist with a research focus on architectural theory and the history and theory of town and landscape . She is a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts . There she teaches art and cultural history on the architecture course and is head of the Institute for the History and Theory of Design.

Life

Hauser studied history, linguistics, philosophy, German and art history in Bonn, Freiburg and Berlin. From 1983 to 1988 she was a research assistant at the TU Berlin at the Department of Semiotics . In 1989 she received her doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin and her doctoral thesis “The view of the city. Semiotic Studies on Literary Perception until 1910 ”published a year later in Berlin.

From 1988 to 1995 she worked as an organizational consultant, 1995/96 Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin , then from 1996 to 1999 habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Research stays in Washington DC and Paris in 1999 as well as teaching activities in Berlin, Innsbruck and Stockholm followed. Hauser's habilitation thesis “Metamorphoses of Waste” was published in 2001 in Frankfurt / New York and is a research work on drafts for the redesign of industrial wasteland in Western Europe.

As a visiting professor for landscape aesthetics, she taught at the University of Kassel from 2000 to 2003 . From 2003 to 2005 she was a professor at the Faculty of Architecture at Graz University of Technology and was in charge of the Institute for Art and Cultural Studies. In 2005 Hauser was appointed professor for art and cultural history at the UdK Berlin, where she heads the Institute for the History and Theory of Design. In addition, she is part of the management and the staff of the DFG graduate schools "Identity and Heritage" and "Knowledge of the Arts".
