Karl Hoffmann (architect)

Karl Hoffmann (born April 23, 1887 in Vienna , † January 19, 1957 in Graz ) was an Austrian architect .

Hoffmann studied at the technical universities in Graz and Vienna (1905–1912), in Vienna with Max von Ferstel , Carl König and Karl Mayreder . Parallel to his studies, he did an internship with the Mayreder brothers and worked on a housing reform commission at the Ministry of Public Works. From 1915 to 1922 he worked as an assistant for structural design at the Technical University of Vienna.

In 1922 he was associate professor, from 1923 to 1957 full professor of urban planning and architecture and building theory at the Technical University of Graz , where he was also rector from 1930 to 1931 and dean in 1942. His students included Othmar Barth , Franz Heigl the Elder and Franz Schmuckenschläger .

He prepared urban plans for Graz in 1928, Villach in 1931, Steyr in 1935, Bruck an der Mur and Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . As a representative of the Garden City Movement, he was active in residential, housing and school construction.
