Susanne Ihsen (born May 30, 1964 in Bielefeld ; † August 20, 2018 in Munich ) was a German professor for gender studies in engineering at the Technical University of Munich .

Life

After primary school in Enger , she attended the Widukind-Gymnasium Enger up to middle school . From August 1982 to the end of 1985 she completed an educator training at the college of the von Bodelschwinghschen Anstalten Bethel in Bielefeld , passed the advanced technical college entrance qualification , and from 1986 to 1994 studied sociology , political science and international technical and economic cooperation (ITWZ) at the University of Duisburg and the RWTH Aachen for the Magistra Artium . Your master's thesis is entitled Female Students at a Technical University. On the study situation of mechanical engineering students at RWTH Aachen . In May 1999, a doctorate it with the thesis to develop a new culture of quality in engineering courses. A process-accompanying intervention concept by the cyberneticist and information scientist Klaus Henning .

Subsequently, from August 1994 she worked as a research assistant at the University Didactic Center (HDZ) and chair of computer science in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen, from February 1999 on in the VDI main group “The Engineer in Profession and Society”, before becoming head of the Department "Profession and Career" in the Association of German Engineers (VDI). In December 2004 she was appointed professor for gender studies in engineering at the Technical University of Munich, initially on a temporary basis. In 2010 the professorship was consolidated. At the time of her employment at the Technical University of Munich, she was the first female professor for gender studies in engineering in Germany. In addition, from April 2004 she had a teaching position in the production engineering department of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and taught as a visiting professor in the 2009/10 winter semester in the field of "gender research" at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology ) and at the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in the 2011/12 winter semester (Department Construction).

Ihsen's research focus was on gender studies, especially for engineering and natural sciences. Their theoretical approach was based on systems theory in engineering, in particular on control loops.

In addition to her teaching activities, Ihsen was a board member of the Federal Working Group on Higher Education Didactics (AHD) from 1997 to 1998, also deputy chairman of the competence center Technology-Diversity-Equal Opportunities , head of the Gender and Diversity working group of the European Society for Engineering Education (Société Européenne pour la formation des Ingénieurs (SEFI)) and from 1998 member of the editorial board of the bimonthly European Journal of Engineering Education .

In 2015 she was awarded the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in silver for her contribution to understanding the role of women in technical sciences .
