The Widukind-Gymnasium Enger (internal school for short: WGE ) is a secondary school in the East Westphalian town of Enger in the Herford district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is named after the old Saxon Duke Widukind .

General

The high school, located on the outskirts in the countryside, has around 1000 students who are taught by over 90 teachers (as of 2016). Since the 2008/2009 school year, the school has largely been divided into four classes.

The school has a school garden , several biotopes for biology lessons , two sports halls and a large lawn with three football fields .

The old building dates from the late 1970s. This is where the classes from the seventh grade up are accommodated. The annual Abitur exams are also carried out there. The new building was completed in the mid-2000s. There are classrooms for the fifth and sixth grades as well as several group rooms. Both the old building and the new building have three floors.

The school has a student library, computer rooms and subject rooms (some with internet access) for biology , chemistry and physics .

Music plays a major role at Widukind-Gymnasium: A “music class” (wind instruments or strings) is offered for the fifth and sixth grades. Every year in December there is a big Christmas concert (in the historic Engeraner Stiftskirche ), in spring a summer concert.

The school is based on Agenda 21 in its project work , has been one of Europe's environmental schools since 2000 and manages the projects within this framework

Egypt project

Many years ago the Egypt project was introduced at the school , as part of which the sixth grades travel to Hanover for two days to deal with the history of ancient Egypt in the Kestner Museum and to give lectures on the knowledge gained. Their evaluation is included in the certificate grade for the subject of history . The preparation of the students for the seminar with the help of learning materials begins several weeks before the visit to the museum.

About a week after the two-day excursion, the students travel to Hanover again, this time accompanied by their parents or family, to present the knowledge they have gathered.

Jazz rock ensemble

In addition to the choir and the orchestra, there has also been a school band in the musical school offering again since August 2002. The jazz - rock ensemble has a very extensive, self-selected repertoire of pieces from all genres. In addition to numerous concerts inside and outside the school, one of the highlights was the performance at the Engeraner Cherry Blossom Festival . From the twelfth grade there is also the option of choosing instrumental or vocal practice as an artistic subject.

Rumpelstiltskin literature project

Since October 1981, the Rumpelstiltskin literature project has been taking place at the school for the promotion of literary children and young people . The texts created in the writing workshops, which are grouped according to age, are published quarterly in the school's own literary journal Rumpelstiltskin .

Internet soap full of crass - life!

The Widukind-Gymnasium participates with some students in the theater education project of the Gymnasium St. Kaspar Neuenheerse , which is carried out in cooperation with the Landestheater Detmold and the University of Bielefeld in the 2006/2007 school year.

Trading business

Since 2017, the school has had a student-run trading shop. This offers ice cream, drinks and school supplies. The trade is conducted without the intention of making a profit .

Sports

The WGE has already become district champion several times with school teams in various sports. The Engeraner were once with the soccer team in the national finals in Berlin and landed there in sixth place.
