Susanne Muth

Susanne Muth (born July 25, 1967 in Karlsruhe ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Susanne Muth passed her Abitur in Darmstadt in 1987 and then began studying Classical Archeology , Ancient History and Latin Philology at the University of Mainz and the University of Heidelberg . Between 1996 and 1997 she worked on her dissertation supported by a doctoral scholarship from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes and received her doctorate in 1997 at the Faculty of Oriental Studies and Classical Studies in Heidelberg. The theme of the work was experiencing space - living in space. On the function of mythological mosaic pictures in Roman imperial residential architecture . Subsequently, Muth worked on the research project Urban Culture in the Roman Empire of the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) until 1998, supported by a postdoc grant from the Gerda Henkel Foundation . This was followed by a travel grant from the DAI until 1999 . In 1999 Muth's dissertation was awarded the Bruno Snell Prize of the Mommsen Society .

Until 2000, Muth was an assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and researched in 2000/01, supported by a research grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, on dealing with the buildings of the past on the Roman Forum . In 2001 she became an assistant, three years later a senior assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the LMU. There she completed her habilitation in 2004 on the subject of violence in images. On the phenomenon of media violence in Athens in the 6th and 5th centuries BC Chr. And got the venia legendi for the subject of Classical Archeology at the Faculty of Cultural Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. In 2007 she represented the chair there and was then a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2007/08 . Since October 2008 Muth has been W3 Professor for Classical Archeology and the Aftermath of Antiquity at the Winckelmann Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Muth researches ancient imagery as a mirror of the Greek and Roman culture of life, their function as well as the context, the suggestion of images and their historical significance. In addition, she is interested in urban planning, cityscapes, especially in public spaces, in Roman and late antique living culture, the forms of cultural transformation between the Roman Empire and late antiquity and the history of science. In addition, she deals with the method discussion and archaeological image analysis. She is currently researching, among other things, the representation of violence in ancient art.
