Susanne Nickel (* 1967 in Schmalkalden ; † 2016 in Halle ) was a German book artist .

life and work

After working as an educator , she trained as a bookbinder from 1989 to 1991 and then studied painting and graphics / book art at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle . She completed her studies in 1996 with a thesis on Surrealism in Book Art . Together with Veronika Schäpers and Frauke Otto founded the no longer existing book artist group "á3"; since 1997 she has been based in Halle as a freelancer.

Susanne Nickel created seemingly surreal artist books, one-offs and objects in small editions. She worked with rubber , stamp and screen printing , stencil writing , drawing and overpainting . For her collages , she also used motifs from old books and magazines, such as children's book illustrations or old anatomy pictures and handwritten items from poetry albums that she had found at flea markets . She illustrated texts and poems by Hilde Domin , Federico Garcia Lorca , Ulrike Draesner ( when the dog died, she bought a new dress ), Günter Herburger , Ernst Meister and experimental poetry by José FA Oliver . The short story We are making a man of Margaret Atwood chose them as a template for a 16-page book in the screen printing process.

Works by the scholarship holder of the Art Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt (2007 and 2012) can be found in the following collections, among others: Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna) , Museum of Modern Art New York , Austrian National Library , Vienna Library and many other international public and private collections .

Nickel regularly took part in the Frankfurt Book Fair , the Leipzig Book Fair , the Minipressenmesse Mainz, the editionale Cologne and the Poetenfest Erlangen.
