The Suva Planina ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сува планина ) is a mountain range in southeast Serbia . The mountains formed during the Alpidic Orogeny are part of the Carpatho-Balkanids and represent the highest mountains in this chain in eastern Serbia.

From the village of Ljuberadja , which is part of the Babušnica municipality , the mountains extend in two directions: in the north to Bela Palanka and in the north-west to Niška Banja , a suburb of Niš . The name of the mountain, which means "dry mountain", is due to the fact that the springs are very rare in the higher elevations of the mountains. The highest peak of Suva Planina is the Trem with a height of 1810 meters. Other important peaks are Dordina Cuka (1734 m), Golemo Straziste (1713 m), Litica (1683 m), Sokolov Kamen (1555 m) and Golemi Vrh (1535 m).

The mountains are mainly composed of limestone and dolomite , on the south side there are also lake sediments , conglomerates and sandstone deposited during the early Miocene . The Suva Planina has a continental mountain climate and the area is one of the hottest in Serbia in summer. In the past it suffered from overgrazing by goats, but this did not affect the diversity of Tertiary and Ice Age relics.

Flora and fauna

The predominant habitat types are old mixed forest as well as wild or hardly cultivated, plant-rich meadows on limestone soils. 25 different plant communities and 1261 plant species were counted in this area , 128 of which are endemic . A well-known and conspicuous steno-endemic species that is only found on the Suva Planina is the Pančić Columbine . This two-colored columbine is restricted to limestone rocks of the upper montane level of the Suva Planina and enjoys the status of a Red List species due to its close occurrence in Serbia.

Knowledge of the fauna of this area is considered to be satisfactory. 25 different mammal species have been identified, including the short- eared mouse , western blind vole , wood mouse and tree dormouse . Among the 139 recorded birds are Egyptian vultures , short-toed eagles , golden eagles and peregrine falcons . In addition, 86 different types of butterflies have been identified, including the Easter butterfly and the black Apollo , which are of particular importance in Serbia.

Thanks to a significant decrease in the number of goats, grazing intensity is now low in most locations. The main human influence is now the timber industry . The area has the status of a nature reserve ( Rezervata prirode ), it is considered a geological natural heritage of Serbia, as well as an ornithologically significant area.
