Sven-Hendrik Voss
Sven-Hendrik Voss (born February 6, 1978 in Berlin (West) ) is a German electrical engineer . He is professor for digital technology and computer architecture at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.
Life
Voss grew up as the son of an academic family in the Lichterfelde-West district of Steglitz in Berlin (West) . After graduating from high school in 1997 at Lilienthal-Gymnasium in the Berlin district of Lichterfelde and doing one year of community service , Voß studied electrical engineering with a focus on communications engineering and electronics at the Technical University of Berlin , where he completed his diploma in 2003. In 2008, he was at the TU Berlin with a dissertation on a topic of microelectronics doctorate .
During his studies he already worked as a student assistant at the Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin. After graduating, he spent a year in industry and then returned to the Heinrich Hertz Institute as a research assistant .
Voss has been a professor at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin since 2011, where he heads the department for digital technology and computer architecture. At the same time, he headed the High-Speed Hardware Architectures department at the Heinrich Hertz Institute together with Peter Gregorius from 2010 to April 2014 . This emerged from the Hardware Architectures & PCB Design working group in the Image Processing department , which had dealt with the implementation of algorithms on hardware platforms. This working group has been headed by Voss since 2009.
Sven-Hendrik Voss lives in Berlin , is married and has a son and a daughter.
Act
Voss initially dealt with audio and video compression and in 2003 developed a cost-optimized AAC encoder for operation on a reduced-power ARM processor and demonstrated a 10-fold increase in speed. This made it possible to perform computationally intensive compression methods on embedded processors.
Voss has made a number of scientific contributions to high-speed data processing and communication, in particular based on highly optimized FPGA solutions, and other subject areas and is still concerned with fast memory and interface systems in the GHz range. In 2009 he and his team demonstrated real-time HD video processing and transmission over fiber optics using FPGAs.
He is considered to be one of the fathers of modern hardwired network protocol stacks . Network protocol stacks are fully integrated at gate level as a microelectronic circuit. This enables the highest speeds and the lowest latencies , as well as extremely secure and stable network connections, since the protocol processing takes place entirely without the use of microprocessors or operating systems , but as dedicated logic. In 2004 he and colleagues at the HHI developed an InfiniBand interface in VHDL . In 2009, a 10G Ethernet TCP / IP stack implemented entirely in hardware followed .
Even before his appointment at the Beuth University, he had been teaching technical computer science at the Berlin universities of applied sciences TFH Berlin and HTW Berlin since 2008 . With his appointment for the summer semester 2011 at the age of 32, he is the youngest professor at Beuth University.
Since 2011, Voss has been publishing specialist articles at irregular intervals in the magazine FKT - the specialist magazine for television, film and electronic media on topics of fast data processing, 3D and Internet media and thus also addresses a broad audience outside the academic environment.
Memberships
From 2010 to 2014 Voß was a member of the Fraunhofer Embedded Systems Alliance. In this alliance, eleven institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft work together on new technologies and practical solutions for embedded systems . The aim of the research network is to interlink the developments in the area of embedded systems across the boundaries of industries and scientific disciplines. Voss represented the competencies of high-speed data processing and communication and was instrumental in ensuring that embedded systems can also benefit from high-speed hardware architectures in areas such as medical technology, automotive or avionics.
In the years 2009–2010, Voss was involved in SCUBE-ICT, an innovative EU-funded initiative with the aim of promoting cooperation in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) between the EU, Belarus and Ukraine. There he represented the research / industry level with the subjects of "high-speed communication systems", "board and ASIC designs" and held lectures and seminars, among others. a. in Minsk (Belarus).
