Muhammad Naquib al-Attas

Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas ( Arabic محمد نقيب العطاس, DMG Muḥammad Naqīb al-ʿAṭṭās ; * September 5, 1931 in Bogor , Java , Dutch East Indies ) is a contemporary Muslim philosopher and thinker from Malaysia. In his research he deals with different aspects of the Islamic world of thought and culture, in particular with Sufism , cosmology , metaphysics , philosophy as well as with Malay language and literature.

biography

After graduating from secondary school in his hometown in 1951, he spent several years studying in England from 1952 to 1955, first at Eaton Hall in Chester , then at the Sandhurst Military Academy . He traveled extensively, visiting Spain and North Africa, among others, where he was impressed by the Islamic heritage, and continued his studies at the Malaya University in Singapore from 1957 to 1959. After a three-year study with the help of a Canadian scholarship at the Islamic Studies Institute of McGill University in Montreal , he continued his studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London with Arthur John Arberry and Martin Lings , where he wrote his doctoral thesis in 1962 as a two-volume work on the Mysticism completed by Hamza Fansuri . In 1965 he returned to Malaysia, where he was dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1968 to 1970 and then transferred to the newly founded National University of Malaysia , where, as dean of the Philosophy Faculty, he strongly advocated the use of Malay at the university level began.

In 1987 he founded the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) in Kuala Lumpur and became its first director. He is one of the Senior Fellows of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought), Jordan .

The Muslim scholars trained by al-Attas in the "original" ISTAC include Wan Mohd Nor Wan Daud ( ATMA - UKM ), Zainiy Uthman ( IIUM ), Alparslan Açıkgenç ( Fatih University ), Mustafa Cerić ( Grand Mufti of Bosnia and Herzegovina ), Zaidi Ismail ( IKIM ), Sani Badron ( IKIM ), Wan Azhar ( IKIM ), Farid Shahran (former Vice President of ABIM , IIUM ), Wan Suhaimi Wan Abdullah ( UM ), Azizan Sabjan ( USM ), Adi Setia ( IIUM ), Ustaz Asham Ahmad ( IKIM ) and Ustaz Nik Roskiman ( IKIM ).

The social scientist Syed Hussein Alatas (1928–2007) was his brother.
