Sylvester Tomsa
Sylvester Tomsa (born February 12, 1849 in Mratín , Bohemia , † May 17, 1921 in Vienna ) was an Austrian civil engineer and architect .
Life
Sylvester Tomsa was born in Bohemia in 1849 as the son of the higher official Theodor Tomsa and his wife Maria. He probably spent his school days in Prague . He then studied architecture for three years at the Bauakademie in Berlin . After one year of military service, Tomsa then studied in 1874 and 1875 at the civil engineering school of the Vienna University of Technology and in 1876 received a job as a construction trainee in the building department of the Lower Austrian Lieutenancy . In 1877 he was Bauadjunkt , 1884 Engineer, Senior Engineer in 1891 and 1909. Finally, head of the Engineering Department. He retired in 1912.
Tomsa was the auditing commission for the construction industry, correspondent for the central commission for research and preservation of art and historical monuments and a permanent member of the Viennese city expansion commission. From 1879 he was a member of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects and from 1908 of the Central Association of Architects in Austria.
In 1878 Tomsa married Sofia Theresia Anna Hanel, who came from Prague and with whom he had a daughter. Sofia Sophie Tomsa née Hanel is a sister-in-law of Viktor von Kraus (General) .
Works
As part of his work, Tomsa was involved in numerous public construction projects in Vienna, where he seldom worked out drafts, but was responsible for the construction management and was responsible for the execution and detailed planning.
The buildings he carried out include:
- 1892–1894: Institute for civil servants' daughters, Vienna 8, Langegasse 47, design by Oskar Merz and Karl Bringmann
- 1898–1901: Kuk Versatzamt (now Dorotheum ), Vienna 1, Dorotheergasse 17, design by Emil von Förster
- 1905–1908: Hygiene Institute Vienna 9, Kinderspitalgasse 15, design by Ludwig Tremmel
- 1907–1910: Higher Federal Training and Research Institute for the Chemical Industry , Vienna 17, Rosensteingasse 79, design by Julius Deininger and Wunibald Deininger
