Genre : Discus fish ( Symphysodon )
Type : Symphysodon tarzoo
Scientific name
Symphysodon tarzoo
Lyons , 1959

Symphysodon tarzoo is one of currently three species inthe discus cichlid genus from the Amazon river basin in tropical South America. The species wasdescribedas a subspecies of Symphysodon discus by E. Lyonsin a specialist aquarium journal in 1959 using abluespecimen of Symphysodon importedfrom Leticia (Colombia), but the description was rejected by LP Schulz in another specialist aquarium journal in 1960. In 2006, however, the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander, together with two colleagues, found that the discus fish living in the western Amazon region differedsignificantly from the Symphysodon aequifasciatus found in the central and eastern Amazon region, both in their mitochondrial DNA and in their coloration, and classified these discus fish to the taxon Symphysodon tarzoo .

features

In contrast to the predominantly brown Symphysodon aequifasciatus, Symphysodon tarzoo is more bluish to greenish in color and differs from other discus fish by a clear pattern with red dots on the sides of the body and on the anal fin. The subsequently deposited neotype of the species, the type specimen has apparently not survived , is a full-grown male 13.2 cm in length with 14 abdominal vertebrae and 17 caudal vertebrae and the following meristic determination criteria :

As with all discus fish, however, Symphysodon tarzoo can also be assumed to have more or less variability.

Lyons describes the fish as predominantly aquamarine blue on the body, they have deep red pelvic fins, a red border in the dorsal fin, a large anal fin that is covered with bright red [...] pits, and this fin is also red edged . He also quotes an ornamental fish importer that the head of this blue discus appears to be wider, and it has a kind of bulldog face .

distribution

Symphysodon tarzoo occurs in the Amazon to the west of the Purus anticline (“Purus arch”) between Manaus and the Rio Bauana . Only a few specimens of Symphysodon tarzoo are found further downstream. Symphysodon aequifasciatus is completely absent further upstream. At the Purus anticline, which acts as a phylogeographic barrier, the current changes, the gradient and sediment are deposited. However, Symphysodon tarzoo have also been caught in the Rio Madeira , which flows further downstream into the Amazon.
