Synagogue (Bad Sobernheim)
The synagogue in Bad Sobernheim , a town in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1859. The derelict synagogue at Gymnasialstrasse 9 is a protected cultural monument .
architecture
The late classical sandstone block building with a pyramid roof has arched windows. In 1904 a window axis was added to the synagogue . The arched portal has a Hebrew inscription and the year 1858.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was demolished and desecrated. The prayer books were burned.
In 1939 the synagogue was sold to the city. During the Second World War , the synagogue building was used as a storage room for the Wehrmacht .
Todays use
After the synagogue building, which was privately owned after the war, was used as a warehouse by companies until the 1980s, the "Förderverein Synagoge Sobernheim eV", founded in 1989, took over the building, which the city bought again in 2001, and built it after the Renovation of a memorial and library in it.
