Heuchelheim synagogue

The synagogue in Heuchelheim was established in 1880 in a building at 28 Hauptstrasse. In 1909 it was given up. A short time later it was sold and later demolished.

synagogue

There was already a prayer room in Heuchelheim in the middle of the 18th century. This was on the upper floor of a private house. The premises (the prayer room was 3.60 meters long and 3 meters wide, had a height of 2.60 meters and there was a kind of shed with the women's seats at a height of 2 meters) were so cramped that the district office decided to build a synagogue in 1869 recommended. However, due to a lack of financial resources, this was not possible for the community. When the Jewish elementary school at Hauptstrasse 28, which had been there since 1858, was closed in 1880 , the synagogue was moved there. In 1909 the synagogue was given up, sold a short time later and later demolished. Today there is a house on the property.

Heuchelheim Jewish Community

Jews are mentioned in Heuchelheim as early as the 16th century. The number of members of the Jewish community increased until the middle of the 19th century and has steadily decreased since then. In 1909 the community was dissolved and incorporated into the Jewish community of Ingenheim . In addition to the synagogue, the community had a mikveh and an elementary school. The dead were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Ingenheim . In October 1940 the last remaining Jewish residents were deported to the French internment camp Gurs as part of the so-called Wagner-Bürckel campaign .
