The synagogue at Judengasse 4 in Michelbach an der Lücke , a district of Wallhausen , is the oldest surviving Jewish house of worship in Württemberg and is now used as a documentation center for the history of the Jews in Franconia .

history

After the Jewish community had initially used a prayer room in a private house, in 1756 the construction of a synagogue on a previously undeveloped property was approved. The synagogue was built in 1756 and 1757. The baroque building had a barrel vault with a hipped roof, high arched windows, a women's gallery and on the east side a small apse with a round window.

Around a hundred years later, the number of Jewish residents had peaked. About a third of Michelbach's population belonged to the Jewish community at that time. On the occasion of a renovation at that time - 1859/60 - the Württemberg king donated four chandeliers for the synagogue. A little later, the Jewish community in Michelbach shrank drastically. In 1933 Michelbach still had 35 Jewish residents, of whom at least 16 perished during the Nazi era. After the end of the National Socialists' rule, a member of the congregation returned to Michelbach, but found no more church:

During the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 a window was thrown in, and later the interior of the synagogue was also devastated. The building initially served as an ammunition store for the Crailsheim airport administration , but it came into private hands in 1949 and was then used as a cider cellar store. When the dilapidated structure threatened to be demolished in the 1970s, the community bought the house. In 1979 it was recognized as a monument worth preserving and in 1982 the renovation began with state funds. The roof structure was stabilized by a concrete belt, the wall and ceiling paintings as well as the Torah shrine and the Almemor were reconstructed from a photograph from 1932. The former synagogue has served as a documentation center since 1984.
