The synagogue in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , a town in Rhineland-Palatinate , was a synagogue that was built in 1866/67 and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 . The synagogue was at Ludwigstrasse 18-20.
history
A synagogue was planned in the 1860s when the old synagogue in the back alley had become much too small. According to the plans of Karl Kreitner , the building was built in a Moorish - Neo-Romanesque style. The foundation stone was laid on April 4, 1866 and the ceremonial inauguration took place on May 17 and 18, 1867. In 1909 the Jewish community of Neustadt built a community hall with a comparable style near the synagogue.
architecture
The traufständige stucco building with a flat gable roof had polygonal , of tail hoods crowned corner pilaster strip , which on the eaves cornice jutted out. The two-storey gable risalit on the west facade, i.e. the portal facade , was accompanied in the upper area by polygonal templates rising from consoles , also crowned by tail hoods. A flight of stairs in front of the arched portal with a double-leaf coffered door emphasized the sacred character of the building. Above the portal there was a stepped gable in which a triple window was inscribed. This and the other windows on the long sides had round arches. On the west gable, the tablets of the law were enthroned in a rectangular tower crowned by acroteries .
The eaves sides had narrow pilaster strips protruding over the verge cornice and two two-lane windows between which there was a twin window . All windows were designed as tracery windows with horseshoe arches.
time of the nationalsocialism
The synagogue in Neustadt was desecrated and set on fire during the November pogroms in 1938 . The ruin was demolished and in 1939 the NSKK put a fleet of vehicles on the property. The Jewish community center was used by the Hitler Youth .
Commemoration
In 1954 a bilingual memorial stone was erected with the inscription: To commemorate the victims from the Palatinate 1933–1945 . Today it is in the Jewish cemetery .
On November 9, 1988, a new memorial stone with a bronze plaque was erected in the administration building in Ludwigstrasse, as terraced houses were built on the synagogue site in 1985.
