history

In 1398 the place was mentioned as Schyk , then Szyk Inferior, Maior (1564). The name is topographically derived from * Schīk (< Middle High German : Schiec ; crooked, sloping [land]). The popular explanation of the name is also that it is derived from the military word szyk (German: Schick; a battle formation ).

The Roman Catholic parish was established between 1358 and 1373. In the 16th century Szyk was an important center of Arianism (the Polish Brothers ).

The place initially belonged to the Kingdom of Poland (from 1569 aristocratic republic Poland-Lithuania ), Krakow Voivodeship , Szczyrzyc district. When Poland was first partitioned in 1772, Szyk became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804). From 1855 Szyk belonged to the Limanowa District .

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Szyk came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . From 1975 to 1998 Szyk was part of the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship .
