The gymnastics and sports club Abensberg 1862 e. V. , TSV Abensberg for short, is a sports club in the city of Abensberg .

history

The club was founded on July 18, 1862 under the name Turnverein Abensberg as a pure gymnastics club. In 1933 the merger with the soccer club 1. FC Abensberg took place, which gave the club a soccer department. By renaming to TSV Abensberg in 1946, the club got its current name. With around 2500 members, the TSV is the largest club in the Kelheim district and one of the largest in the Bavarian State Sports Association .

structure

The association maintains a total of 14 departments in various areas of popular sport as well as top-class sport .

Judo

In 1963 Kurt Hinz founded the judo department of TSV Abensberg. In 1968 he was promoted to the Niederbayern district league and in 1970 was promoted to the regional league. Due to the steady growth of the department, TSV reached the Judo-Bayernliga in 1973 and in 1976 it was promoted to the Judo-Bundesliga South. In 1985, after taking over the department from Otto Kneitinger, the very successful era of TSV Abensberg began. Since then, starting in 1991, TSV Abensberg has won the German team championships 20 times. With the seven-time win of the European Cup, the highest European team tournament, for the first time in 1994, the international establishment succeeded. In 2002 Otto Kneitinger was awarded the Sports Prize of the Bavarian Prime Minister.

In 1987 Helmut Dietz won the bronze medal at the German championships, and in 1988 he secured seventh place at the Olympic Games in Seoul. In 1991 Henry Stöhr won the European title and Udo Quellmalz the world title in Barcelona. In 2004 Michael Jurack finished third at the Olympic Games in Athens and in 2008 Ole Bischof won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2012 Christopher Völk qualified for the Olympic Games in London, Andreas Tölzer won bronze in London, as did Dimitri Peters . Ole Bischof made it to the final again, but had to admit defeat to Kim Jae-bum , his 2008 final opponent. To this day, the judo team of TSV Abensberg is one of the most successful national teams and one of the strongest internationally.

In January 2015, the club announced that it would withdraw from the Judo Bundesliga , as the club did not want to impose a double burden on the athletes until the 2016 Olympic Games. Thanks to the targeted preparation, Sebastian Seidl , Sven Maresch , Marc Odenthal and André Breitbarth were able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . However, all four fighters lost their opening encounters. After winning the Regionalliga Süd 2015 and the 2nd Bundesliga South 2016 without any problems, TSV Abensberg rose again to the Bundesliga. After returning to the Bundesliga in 2017, Otto Kneitinger ended his work as a department head after 32 years. Erwin Obermeier made himself available as his successor. This was replaced by Martin Oberndorfer in mid-2018.
