action

Dario is the Dominicis' problem child. His illness - attacks of paranoia and depression - drains the material substance of the family as well as their sense of togetherness. Because of him, the father, a little master tailor, goes into debt; because of him the mother neglects her husband and Gabriele, her second son. The mother's unwavering, yes, stubborn belief that her insane child can be cured eventually loosens and breaks family ties. When she expels Gabriele from the house because he had allowed Dario to lock himself in his room with a kitchen knife, her husband helps Gabriele with his step into a new life. The end is gray and gloomy: Gabriele is out of the house, Dario back in the institution - the father has to prepare his own breakfast because the mother is obviously no longer able to cope with the blows of fate.

criticism

The lexicon of international films draws the following conclusion: “A penetrating psychological study with precise observation of the social milieu and the human reactions to the unusual […].” The Protestant film observer comes to a similar assessment: “To be recommended for human reproach and for the sake of the precise drawing of the characters - due to the realistic representation and the not easy subject, however, only suitable for 18 year olds and up.
