Tamis Wever

Tamis Wever SMA (born February 23, 1937 in Spierdijk , † March 19, 2004 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch artist and theologian .

Life

The son of a small cattle dealer from a humble background, he was born in the Dutch province of North Holland as the first of eight children . From 1950 he attended small seminar (grammar school) in Nieuw Herlaar in the province of Brabant. From 1956 he studied theology and philosophy in the large seminary ( seminary ) in Aalbeek, Limburg province. On 21st December 1962 , he became the ordained priest . He was a member of the order of the Sociëteit voor Afrikaanse Missiën and wanted to go as a missionary to Ghana in Africa . A smallpox vaccination worsened his already poor health and forced him to give up his mission plans. His eyesight deteriorated and he was forced to wear very strong glasses. As a result, he was afraid of going blind .

After two years of pastoral teaching in Erkelenz , he went to Rome in 1965 to study theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University , with a study visit to Jerusalem . Wever returned to the Netherlands after completing his studies and taught exegesis and the Old Testament at the Free University (VU) in Amsterdam and at the Catholic Theological University (KTU) in Utrecht . As a recognized expert on the Old Testament, Wever was also involved in work such as the translation of the Willibrord Bible in the mid-1990s. The Willibrord Bible is the standard work of the Roman Catholic Church in the Dutch-speaking area in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Wever began painting in the mid-1950s . Many of his works are related to people , erotica , but also to theological topics. Wever mainly worked with oil paint , watercolor and gouache techniques, but also experimented with installations , collages and mixed media . His oeuvre comprises around 11,000 works.

Wever died of a heart attack on March 19, 2004 . He is buried at the headquarters of his order in Cadier en Keer near Maastricht .
