Tarka is a rural municipality in the department Belbédji in Niger .

Tarka is in the Sahel . The neighboring communities are Ingall in the northwest, Aderbissinat in the north, Tenhya in the northeast, Gangara in the east, Falenko in the southeast, El Allassane Maïreyrey in the south, Tagriss in the southwest and Gadabédji in the west. The municipality is divided into 177 administrative villages, 54 traditional villages, 94 hamlets, 59 camps and 23 water points. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Belbédji (also: Belbéji, Belbégi).

The Tarka Valley runs through the municipal area in an east-west direction, which is around 300 kilometers long and continues west through the Maradi and Tahoua regions .

history

The French colonial administration established a canton in Tarka in 1943 . The Tarka Valley formed its northern border with an area inhabited by nomads. An administrative post ( poste administratif ) was set up in Belbédji in 1988 , a lower administrative unit headed by a chef de poste administratif . The rural community of Tarka emerged from the canton of Tarka and part of the previously unincorporated area north of the Tarka valley during a nationwide administrative reform in 2002. The administrative post of Belbédji was elevated to a department in 2011. Since then, Tarka no longer belongs to the Tanout department , but to the Belbédji department.

population

At the 2001 census, Tarka had 63,848 residents. For the year 2010, 86,695 inhabitants were calculated. In Tarka members live mainly of agriculture based Hausa subgroup Gobirawa well as on remote pasture specialized Fulani subgroups Katchinanko'en, Oudah'en and Wodaabe and Tuareg subgroups Ichiriffen, Ikanawan, Imouzgou, Imouzwagan, Imuzzurag, Inesseliman, Kel Gariss, Kel Gress, Kel Iferwane and Tegama.

Economy and Infrastructure

The north of the municipality belongs to a zone in which pasture farming is the predominant occupation. The south is in the area of agropastoralism . In the main town there has been a local radio communautaire since May 22, 2000 .
