history

The association was created in 1909 in the south of Tarnów through the merger of the smaller association Biało-Czerwoni and Pogon , founded in 1906 and 1908, resulting in the Tarnovia association. With the Polish national colors white and red, the founders wanted to emphasize their patriotism after Poland was divided up at the end of the 18th century and only re-established as an independent state in 1918. (see also: Partitions of Poland ) Before the First World War , the club played some games against other clubs from Galicia such as KS Cracovia , Resovia Rzeszów and Czarni Jasło .

In 1913 Tarnovia played in the Galician A class, but the start of the war halted the team's development. In the spring of 1919 the team played again, the first game against Cracovia Krakau ended 1: 1.

From 1919 to 1922 the club played 150 friendly matches and was the best team from the Tarnów region. In 1920 the club got a new stadium near the train station. The first game there took place in the autumn of 1921, Tarnovia defeated the 16th Infantry Regiment 11-0. The stadium was expanded over time and three tennis courts were built.

From 1922 the club played in the B class Tarnów - Jasło . In the first season, the club won 11 games out of 12 with a goal difference of 28-6. Tarnovia qualified for the A-Class playoffs but lost 2-1 to Cracovia's reserves and 5-0 to Hakoah Bielsko. In 1923 the club again won the B class, but failed again in the playoffs at Olsza Kraków and Hakoah Bielsko. In 1924, the club played in the B class against some clubs that are still known today, such as Resovia Rzeszów, Wisłoka Dębica , Jutrzenka Kraków and KS Podgórze Kraków . In 1924 Tarnovia played a friendly against a team from Hradec Králové , which was lost 1-0. Some foreign teams came to Tarnów in the early 1920s, mostly from Hungary .

In 1925 Tarnovia again won the B class, with only one game against Resovia Rzeszów being lost. In 1926, the club then managed, temporarily under Józef Kałuża , promotion to the A-class, which was the second highest Polish division at that time. The club was first in the relegation group from Zwierzyniecki Kraków, Biała Lipnik and Victoria Sosnowiec .

In 1927 the club was second in the A-class Krakow behind Cracovia. In 1928, the club resigned from the Sokol movement as an independent sports club Tarnovia . In the same year the best players left the club. Józef Smoczek and Władysław Jachimek moved to Garbarnia Kraków . As a result, the club could not build on its placement of the previous season and scored 6 wins and 3 draws, but conceded 16 defeats. In 1929 the club was able to improve and achieved 13 victories.

The younger generation of players could not keep the team in the A class, and so Tarnovia was relegated in 1932, but was able to climb straight back up. In 1934, as in the 1927 season, the club was second behind Grzegorzecki Kraków, in 1935 Tarnovia then rose again. In 1937, the club made it back to the A-Class Krakow, which was renamed Regional League Krakow. In the unfinished 1939 season, Tarnovia finished fifth after 20 games. In autumn 1938, the club played a friendly game against BAC Vienna at home , which they won 5-0. In return, Tarnovia was invited to a game in Vienna in the autumn of 1939, but this never took place.

During the Second World War, Tarnovia footballers played secretly on the outskirts of the city. Several players lost their lives in the war. Thanks to the efforts of pre-war activists, the club played again from the beginning of 1945, the first friendly match took place on February 4th. After the war, the team largely consisted of the players who played in the U-19 of Tarnovia in 1939.

In the autumn of 1947, the club achieved the greatest success in its history, promotion to the Ekstraklasa . Tarnovia won the regional eliminations and beat Partyzant Kielce , Legia Krosno , and JKS Jarosław in the playoffs in south-eastern Poland . In the national playoffs, the club was third behind Ruch Chorzów and Legia Warsaw , but ahead of Widzew Łódź and Lechia Gdańsk .

In the 1948 season Tarnovia scored 22 points with his best player Antoni Barwiński , who played 17 international matches for Poland from 1947 to 1950 , and was eleventh of 14 teams. Thus, the club rose together with Garbania Kraków, Widzew Łódź and Rymer Radlin in the second division. Nevertheless, Tarnovia was able to achieve strong results in his only season in the Ekstraklasa, they won against the well-known clubs Legia Warsaw, Wisła Krakow , Ruch Chorzów, Warta Posen and AKS Chorzów . This season the club was coached by Artur Walter and Wladyslaw Lemieszko (previously coach of Pogoń Lwów ). One of the main supporters was Jerzy Putrament .

After relegation Tarnovia played in the second division. In 1949 the club took second place behind Rymer Radlin. In 1955 he was relegated to the third division and in 1956 to the regional A-class. In the 1960s and 1970s Tarnovia played in the third or fourth division. In July, three clubs from Tarnów (Tarnovia, Metal and Tamel) merged to form MZKS Tarnovia. This team then came second in the regional class behind Igloopol Dębica .

In the 1980s Tarnovia played mostly in the third division. Today the club only plays in the fifth class 4th division.
