Leerstand is a television film from the crime series Tatort by ARD and ORF . The film was produced by HR and aired for the first time on October 9, 2005 in the program Das Erste . For the Frankfurt investigators Dellwo and Sänger it is their seventh common case.
action
A homeless person reports the discovery of a female corpse in the old police headquarters in Frankfurt. Since it looks like outside influence, Dellwo and singer should investigate. They look for the alleged corpse in the old building complex, but they find neither a dead woman nor the two police officers who are said to have arrived before them. Instead, they meet homeless people who have set up their quarters in the vacant parts of the building. They're threatening Dellwo and Singer, and it looks like the two cops they were supposed to meet here have been taken hostage. Shortly afterwards, an accomplice of the kidnapper appears with the lawyer Cosima Abt, who, however, does not voluntarily accompany him. While Dellwo and Abbot are being held in the old police headquarters, Charlotte Sänger is also supposed to bring Alexander Kern, who has just been released from prison, to this place. In order not to endanger themselves and the missing officers, they have to respond to the kidnappers' demands.
Kern, who was convicted of the kidnapping of Ulrike Decker in a purely circumstantial trial, had applied for a retrial, which is why he was allowed to leave the prison. He still claims to be innocent, but Ulrike Decker's father wants to prevent the alleged murderer of his daughter from being allowed to go free. Dellwo is supposed to get him to admit the crime. That is why he initiated this whole action. The investigator doubts he can get the smug core to talk, since he couldn't do that three years ago either.
Dellwo makes it clear to Kern that Decker is serious and that he cannot protect him here. Officially, nobody knows that they were all kidnapped here, so no help is to be expected. However, Fromm, Scheer and Kruschke found out that something could not be right with their colleagues and started looking for them. Kruschke finds her trail and notices that his colleagues are being forcibly detained. He comes with SEK reinforcements, but Decker demands that they hold back. After Dellwo and Singer Kern talk to their conscience, he actually leads them to the hiding place in which he had buried the girl. Dellwo opens the lid and under it lies a mummified body.
In the end, Dellwo wakes up in his colleague singer's apartment and realizes that everything seems to have been just a dream. But when he looks at the morning paper, his gaze falls on an article according to which Kern hanged himself in his cell.

criticism
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv rated this crime scene as “bizarre, exciting, irritating. [...] “Empty space” underlines the exceptional position that the Hessian “Tatort” occupies in the concert of the crime series. No run-of-the-mill cases, no routine investigator. Edgy characters, stories eaten up by the broken side of reality and the courage to break with the conventions of the genre if necessary. "
The critics atquotemeter.de say: “'Empty space' is part of a complex crime thriller that makes it almost impossible for the viewer not to turn their heads on. However, this does not reduce the tension that lasts until the end. Instead of action and hectic pace, the film offers continuity and endurance. 'Vacancy' proceeds cautiously and builds up a strong, psychological atmosphere. "
The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm believe that this crime scene is a "psychodrama with Kafkaesque features."
