The end of the line is an episode of the ARD crime series Tatort . The episode produced by the broadcaster Free Berlin (SFB) was first broadcast on March 12, 1995 on ARD. It is the eighth and last crime scene with Chief Detective Franz Markowitz, who this time has to do with a desperate family man who takes him hostage.

The desperate Harald Schäfer is looking for Dr. Gregor Hoffmann, the divorce lawyer for his wife Bettina, who is separated from him. He threatens him with a weapon and demands that he withdraw his wife's application for divorce, otherwise this would have dire consequences. Dr. Hoffmann later visits his acquaintance, Chief Inspector Franz Markowitz, who is about to retire, and tells him about the incident. He is sorry for Schäfer, so he refrained from filing a complaint and asks Markowitz to talk to Harald Schäfer about what Markowitz likes him. When Markowitz and his new assistant, Kraft, appear at Schäfer's and Markowitz tries to make Schäfer understand that he only wants to talk to him unofficially, he pulls his gun. He forces his new acquaintance Bernd Giese to disarm Kraft and chain Markowitz to a radiator, then he throws Kraft and Giese out of the apartment and holed up with Markowitz. Detective Director Schulze has the street in front of Schäfer's house cordoned off and has Dr. Call Hoffmann to get an idea of the hostage-taker. Meanwhile, Schäfer formulates his request to Markowitz that Dr. Hoffmann should withdraw the divorce suit and convince Bettina and their son Markus to return to their marital home. Dr. Meanwhile, Hoffmann describes Schulze and Kraft about the incident that morning in his office and that he considers Schäfer to be unpredictable.
Schulze manages to establish contact by telephone, Markowitz transmits Schäfer's demands, Schulze and Dr. Hoffmann discuss the options for action. Markowitz tries to explain his situation to Schäfer and to persuade him to give up, but Schäfer is convinced that his plan will be a success and takes courage. He confesses to Markowitz that he was recently fired and that he now has nothing more to lose. Meanwhile, Bettina and Markus Schäfer arrive in front of the apartment, Bettina agrees to talk to her husband, but she leaves her son in police custody with her new partner Beckhaus. Bettina goes up to her husband's apartment, Harald implores her to leave Beckhaus and return to him with Markus, Bettina asks him to release Markowitz. When Harald continues to persuade her, Bettina Markowitz asks what she should do, Markowitz advises her to do what she thinks is right. Bettina then tells Harald that she will not return to him and leaves the apartment, the desperate Harald shoots at the apartment door, but misses Bettina, who is brought to safety by officers. Harald then puts on Markowitz, but his magazine is empty. When Harald collapses, Markowitz is able to persuade him to unchain him. Markowitz then chains the disturbed Harald and calls his colleagues up to the apartment. When Harald Schäfer is led away shortly afterwards, he throws himself down the stairs and is killed.

When it was first broadcast on March 12, 1995, Endstation reached a total of 7.64 million viewers, corresponding to a market share of 22.09%.
