Orphaned brothers Black and White, two opposing characters, live in the seedy town of Treasure Town. The city is being transformed into an entertainment world by windy businessmen. The two brothers, on the other hand, take up the fight to save themselves and the city from change.

backgrounds

The manga by Taiyō Matsumoto was published in Japan from 1993 to 1994 in 33 individual chapters in the manga magazine Big Comic Spirits . The Shogakukan Publishing House also brought out these individual chapters in three edited volumes. The anthologies sold surprisingly well in Japan with over a million copies, Tekkon Kinkreet was Matsumoto's breakthrough as a draftsman. In the USA, the manga was first published under the title Black & White in Pulp magazine and then in three volumes by Viz . In 1995 a theater version of the manga was created.

In 1999 Michael Arias created a pilot film together with Koji Morimoto , a first version of the film. The computer-animated pilot film received, among other things, the prize for excellence at the Japan Media Arts Festival 1999. Arias wanted to create the entire film in 3D, but gave up the project when it proved too difficult. It wasn't until 2003, when Arias was working again on Animatrix with Studio 4 ° C , that the idea was picked up again.

The film premiered on October 21, 2006 at the Tokyo International Film Festival . The film was released in Japanese cinemas on December 23 of the same year. In Germany, the film was shown for the first time on February 10, 2007 in the 14plus competition at the Berlinale 2007 .

Awards

At the 61st Mainichi Eiga Concours in 2006, the film won the Ōfuji Noburō Prize , which, in memory of the animator Noburō Ōfuji , is intended to honor artistically valuable animated films. At the Tōkyō Kokusai Anime Fair 2008, Taiyo Matsumoto was awarded for his screenplay of the anime. The artistic director Shinji Kimura was also honored.
