civil war in Syria

In the course of the Syrian civil war , armed clashes between Kurdish and Islamist forces broke out in and around the city. On July 20, 2013, Kurds temporarily detained the local commander ( Emir ), Abu Musab, of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). There were also clashes between Jabhat al-Akrad and Jabhat al-Nusra .

The area around Tall Abyad, a border corridor with Turkey , had become the scene of fighting between Kurds, FSA and radical Islamists. According to Kurdish reports, Turkish armed forces have also participated with drones and artillery.

In February 2015, Kurdish troops launched a major attack on the IS-occupied city. In June 2015 there was fierce fighting over Tall Abyad, during which the alliance Burkān al-Furāt succeeded in liberating the city from IS units. On June 16, 2015, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that Kurdish units had recaptured the city.

On October 10, 2019, Turkish troops and allied militias invaded northern Syria. The offensive was prepared with air strikes and artillery fire, with Tall Abyad being one of the focal points of the Turkish attacks.
