Tell It Like It Is is a music album released by bass baritone Thomas Quasthoff in 2010. After his 2007 jazz album Watch What Happens produced by Till Brönner , Quasthoff presents interpretations of his favorite songs from the genres of R&B , soul and pop on this CD . The album is dedicated to Quasthoff's brother Michael , who died in November 2010 and can also be heard as a background singer on the song he wrote The Whistleman .
Emergence
As a motivation for this second CD release outside of his usual repertoire , Quasthoff is quoted as follows in the CD booklet: “I'm not the new soul discovery (...), that's not the point either. (...) We are making this album because we really enjoy these songs - they are actually very important to me - and because I really enjoy playing with these musicians. ”Together with this group,“ became good friends and exceptional musicians ” the song material from Tell It Like It Is first presented at live performances in February 2010, before the 14 tracks of the album were recorded in May 2010 in Studio 1 of the Berlin Hansa recording studio .
reception
A review of Tell It Like It Is in the German music magazine bluesnews came to the conclusion: “Quasthoff not only masters classical singing, but also knows that and how to get a jazz , blues or soul title after all to different phrasing than a Mozart - aria or Bach - cantata . And so his crossing-over turns out to be an extremely audible matter, which should also be enjoyed by those who - like the reviewer himself - would otherwise probably hardly ever shove a Quasthoff album with classical songs into their CD players. "
In June 2011 Thomas Quasthoff was awarded the ECHO Jazz music prize in the category “National Singer of the Year” for Tell It Like It Is by the German Phono Academy .
