history

The Inupiat had a fishing camp called Nook 32 km south of Teller in the early 19th century . Frederick William Beechey's expedition from 1825 to 1828 found three camps with a total of about 400 inhabitants as well as a winter camp and a cemetery on September 1, 1827 at today's Teller.

In 1866/1867 a Western Union expedition spent the winter in today's Teller, the place was called "Libbyville" or "Libby Station". When the USA introduced reindeer herding in Alaska , there was a reindeer station here from 1892 to 1900. This station was named in 1892 by Sheldon Jackson after Senator Henry Moore Teller .

Teller itself was founded in 1900 after the Bluestone Placer Mine was discovered 25 km south. In the early years Teller had a population of about 5000 people and was an important trading center. Native people from Diomede , Wales , Mary's Igloo and King Island came here to trade.

The airship Norge landed here after the first successful overflight of the North Pole in 1926.

Today Teller is an Inupiat village whose residents depend on fishing and hunting.
