description

Vegetative characteristics

The foothills of the Alps is a perennial , herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 20 to 60 centimeters. Stems , leaves, basket stalks and the shell of the baskets are hairy glandular, usually also spiderweb-woolly hairy, whereby the glandular hairs are often covered.

The blade of the basal leaves is roughly serrated, mostly ovoid to oblong-elliptical in shape. The blade is usually abruptly narrowed into the petiole, which in turn is broadly winged. The blade is 4 to 20 inches long and 1.5 to 3.5 inches wide. The central stem leaves are slightly heart-shaped with a broadly winged stem, their leaf margin is usually toothed. The upper stem leaves are lanceolate to linear, have a narrowed base and are sessile. They are roughly toothed.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to July. Three to ten long stalked flower heads stand together. The flower heads are 3 to 4 cm in diameter, rarely only 2.5 cm. The shell is bell-shaped and 8 to 12 mm long and has no outer shell. The 21 bracts are lanceolate, green and sometimes have a purple tip. They are covered with glandular and glandless hair and are spiderweb-wooly when young. The flowers are light to golden yellow. Ray florets are always present and are 12 to 15 mm long and narrow. The pappus is about as long as the corolla tube.

The achenes are 3 to 4 mm long and glabrous, only when young they can be scattered downy hairy.

Tephroseris longifolia and especially Tephroseris longifolia subsp. gaudinii both have the chromosome number 2n = 48.

ecology

The foothills of the Alps is a hemicryptophyte .

Occurrence

The foothills of the Alps in the proper sense ( Tephroseris longifolia s. Str.) Occurs in Central Europe only south of the Danube, in Austria in Upper and Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, Carinthia and Salzburg. It grows in karst and tall herbaceous areas, in damp meadows and light forests. This species is indifferent to the pH of the subsurface. It occurs scattered from the montane to subalpine altitude , rarely also in the collines.

Systematics and distribution

The Tephroseris species were previously assigned to the genus ragweed ( Senecio ). A synonym is Senecio ovirensis (WDJKoch) DC. , which is why this species is also known as Obir cornwort.

The foothills of the Alps belongs to the species group Tephroseris ovirensis / longifolia . Further representatives of the species group are Tephroseris pseudocrispa (= Senecio pseudocrispus ) and Tephroseris tenuifolia (= Senecio gaudinii ).

Tephroseris longifolia s. st. is the clan described here. In the Carpathian Mountains there is also Tephroseris longifolia subsp. moravica .

According to Euro + Med, this group can be called Tephroseris longifolia s. l. structure as follows:

  • Tephroseris longifolia (Jacq.) Griseb. & Schenk subsp. longifolia : It occurs in France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Slovakia.
  • Tephroseris longifolia subsp. brachychaeta Greuter (Syn .: Senecio brachychaetus Cufod. non DC. 1838): It occurs only in Italy.
  • Tephroseris longifolia subsp. gaudinii (Gremli) Kerguélen (Syn .: Senecio gaudinii Gremli , Tephroseris tenuifolia (Gaudin) Holub , Senecio helenitis . subsp gaudinii . (Gremli) Schinz & Thell , Senecio ovirensis subsp. gaudinii (Gremli) Cufod. ): It is used in France, in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Albania. It grows in plant communities of the Rumicion alpini or Polygono-Trisetion associations.
  • Tephroseris longifolia subsp. moravica Holub : It occurs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
  • Tephroseris longifolia subsp. pseudocrispa (Fiori) Greuter (Syn .: Senecio alpestris var. pseudocrispus Fiori , Tephroseris pseudocrispa (Fiori) Holub , Tephroseris rivularis subsp. pseudocrispa (Fiori) B.Nord. ): It is used in Austria, in Italy and Slovenia.
