August Schenk

August Joseph Schenk (born April 17, 1815 in Hallein , † March 30, 1891 in Leipzig ) was a German botanist and paleontologist ( paleobotanist ). Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Schenk ".

Life

His father was the then Bavarian saltworks chief inspector in Hallein and later general administrator of the mining and saltworks of Bavaria and treasurer of King Maximilian Friedrich von Schenk , his grandfather the statesman Heinrich von Schenk . August Schenk studied natural sciences and medicine in Munich and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He continued his education by studying botany in Erlangen, Vienna and Berlin, and in 1841 he qualified as a private lecturer in botany at the Medical Faculty in Würzburg, where he also became an associate professor of botany in 1844. He was appointed full professor of biology in 1849 at the Faculty of Cameralism that existed until 1858. In 1856 Schenk moved to the Philosophical Faculty. From 1851 he was director of the Würzburg Botanical Garden. In 1868 he followed a call to the University of Leipzig , where he also directed the Botanical Garden . In 1887 he retired. He was an honorary member of the natural research society in Bamberg and was elected a member of the Leopoldina in 1852 . Since 1869 he was a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences .

Honors

After him the plant genus is Schenkia Griseb. named from the gentian family (Gentianaceae).
