The Mission de France (full name Prélature de la Mission de France ) is a Roman Catholic missionary society in France . As a territorial prelature, the motherhouse in Pontigny does not belong to any diocese .
Mission Society
The Catholic institution founded in 1941 on the initiative of Cardinal Emmanuel Suhard (1874–1949) with its seat in Pontigny (originally founded in Lisieux by Louis Augros ) has set itself the task of proselytizing France anew. The mission is to have a sincere and patient dialogue with all those who are remote from the Catholic faith . The founding of the mission also marks the end of the protracted departure of the French episcopate from tendencies towards integralism . Since then, the Church in France has wanted to openly approach that part of society that previously closed itself to Catholicism for historical and political reasons. With his initiative, Suhard wanted to tear down a wall that seemed to keep the working world, residential areas and many social currents away from the church.
The mission community is made up of believers, priests , deacons and lay people who are dedicated to this task.
The religious order in the true sense is also active in Algeria and in various francophone countries.
Territorial Prelature
The community, which has its motherhouse and seminary in the village of Pontigny , was founded on August 15, 1954 by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Omnium ecclesiarum sollicitudo conferred the status of a territorial prelature. The prelate is always bishop of another diocese and for the Mission de France something of a superior general .
The Pontigny Territorial Prelature consisted of 850 Catholics and their pastor in 2013. Under canon law it has been subordinate to the Archdiocese of Dijon since 2002 , previously to the Archdiocese of Sens .
