Terror in Tokyo ( Japanese 残 響 の テ ロ ル , Zankyō no Teroru ) is an anime television series from 2014, which was created by the MAPPA studio . The work, which deals with mysterious terrorist attacks by two young people and the investigations into them, can be classified into the genres of his own , thriller and drama.

action

After the spectacular theft of plutonium from a processing plant in northern Japan, the police are groping in the dark. One of the perpetrators managed to infiltrate as a worker, another broke through the barriers on his snowmobile and escaped again with his accomplice and the booty. Back they left a “VON” sprayed on the floor.

The thieves, two young people who call each other “Nine” and “Twelve”, go to school the following summer, which the girl Lisa Mishima ( 三島 リ サ ) also goes to. She is bullied by her classmates, but the two new classmates seem to want to protect her. Shortly afterwards, the two of them used a school trip to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to first set a fire and then bombs, which caused one of the two towers to collapse. Lisa accidentally discovers Twelve while laying the bombs, who gives her the choice of becoming an accomplice or dying. Lisa agrees - she is unhappy with her life, in which she is exposed to bullying from her classmates and emotional outbursts from her mother. After the attack, in which everyone fled the building in time because of the fire and no one was killed, the police became aware of a video message from the two young people. In it they cheerfully announced the attack as "Sphinx No. 1" and "Sphinx No. 2".

An investigative unit is set up to investigate and another video will appear soon. Sphinx No. 1 and No. 2 herald another explosion, puzzling the police. The investigators cannot solve this in time and a bomb explodes in a police station - again without any deaths. The investigators reactivate Kenjirō Shibazaki ( 柴 崎 健 次郎 ), who was able to solve the puzzle. He used to be a policeman known for his keen sense, but was given a sentence when he tried to investigate a high-ranking politician. Now he should help the investigation to succeed and can actually solve the next riddle of the two young terrorists so that the bomb is found in time. The police also recognize that there is a connection between the attacks and the theft of plutonium.

The next time Nine and Twelve riddle, the police fear that the radioactive material was used for the bomb. Despite warnings from the two terrorists, the police attacked the suspected location of the bomb, so that although the Shibazaki mystery was solved in time, the "bomb" was released. However, these are the investigation files into the attacks, all of which are published. The police are embarrassed. Lisa Mishima is running away from home at the same time to flee from her mother and the bullying. She is picked up by Twelve and accepted by both of them, despite Nine's contradiction. The group's next attack is aimed at the subway. But the police do not work as expected and suddenly the entire cell phone network fails, so that Nine and Twelve cannot stop the bomb remotely. They intervene directly and barely prevent deaths in the explosion, because they absolutely want to prevent damage to people. While Shibazaki now notes that there is a pattern between the attacks that points to a government program and its participants, the upper levels of police and finally the FBI intervene. There is also a young woman with him who the two terrorists know as "Five". She prevented the planned course of the last attack and then informed the two that she had tracked them down. As the next step, she stages an attack announcement by the group at the airport. Since Nine fears that a bomb could actually explode, they accept Five's game and take Lisa with them to reinforce them, who has proven to be of little help with them so far. The Japanese police are not allowed to interfere with the work of the FBI. But some officials around Shibazaki disregard this and also drive to the airport.

At the airport a game of cat and mouse breaks out between the two terrorists and Five. The two boys tried to use Lisa to gain an advantage, but Five remained in control. Only when Shibazaki decides to trust the two terrorists rather than the FBI can his intervention prevent people from being injured by the bomb explosion. Nine, Twelve and Lisa can escape, but their opponent now also knows about Lisa. And the police who drove to the airport are suspended and Shibazaki is released. He cannot be dissuaded and continues to research on his own. He soon receives support from his young colleague Hamura, who does not want to let the case rest either. Together they track down a government project in which gifted orphans from all over the country were given special training ten years earlier. They can no longer find any trace of the former participants. Meanwhile, Five takes action against the two boys and Lisa. First she sends a bomb to their lair and then kidnaps Lisa. Against Nine's contradiction, Twelve wants to save her.

Five lures Twelve into a trap. Despite his best efforts, Twelve cannot defuse the bomb, but neither does she want to leave Lisa alone. He confesses his love for her and finally reveals to Five the hiding place of the atom bomb that he stole with Nine. This was the first that Japan secretly produced. The group behind it around the aged politician Mamiya wants to help Japan regain military strength. To this end, this group also created the Athena Plan, which Shibazaki and Hamura discovered. In the plan, conducted in a remote facility, the children were given a drug that enhances their skills. The plan was exposed by the US secret service and had to be canceled. The only survivor - Five - came into the care of the Americans. In addition, two boys escaped.

Nine turns himself in to the police and demands a press conference, otherwise an atomic bomb would be detonated in Tokyo. The American secret service attacks on the way to the conference, but with the help of Twelve, Nine manages to escape. Five shoots an agent because she wanted Nine for herself and kills herself contentedly with the thought that Nine is safe and her game is over because she doesn't have much time left as for Nine. Since the press conference did not take place, the countdown of the bomb begins. Lisa finds the badly injured Twelve and together they watch the explosion, which takes place in the stratosphere. Nobody is killed, but almost all electronic devices in the region fail. The two go to the dilapidated facility of the Athena Plan, where they meet Nine. Finally Shibazaki arrives and wants to arrest them so that they can tell the world about the machinations of the politicians as planned. For now that all attention is on them, they are sure to be heard by everyone. But the US intervenes to prevent secret information from reaching the public. Before they die, Shibazaki promises the two of them that he will publish their story so that they do not detonate another atomic bomb. So instead of them he makes the secret projects known to the public.

Production and publication

The series was based on a concept by Shin'ichirō Watanabe , who also directed the production. After his previous, humorous work Space Dandy , Watanabe wanted to devote himself to serious subjects. He was inspired by contemporary events such as the attacks on September 11, 2001 , the revelations by WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden, and the challenges posed by the Internet to security. For Watanabe, the starting point of the story was the question of when disaffected and tech-savvy young people use modern technology to spread fear with terror. The anime was produced at Studio MAPPA , the producers were Makoto Kimura and Takamitsu Inoue . The character design was created by Kazuto Nakazawa and the artistic direction was with Hidetoshi Kaneko .

The series was shown by Fuji TV and 14 other network stations in the program block noitaminA , it started on July 11, 2014 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) and ran until September 26. A German dubbed version, divided into two volumes, was released on May 29 and July 10, 2015 by Universum Anime on DVD and Blu-ray. English subtitled and dubbed versions have also been published worldwide by several companies, as well as French, Spanish and Italian.

reception

At the Media Arts Award 2014, Zankyō no Terror was nominated by the jury. In 2015, the anime series was one of 38 anime and manga titles whose distribution was banned in China by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. The arrangement applies in particular to websites.

The German magazine Animania praises the series for the successful take up of many current, explosive social issues such as terror, but also bullying among young people. But even if the plot is exciting and the story is strikingly reminiscent of real events with many pictures, it has some logical gaps. In return, the anime is technically “beyond any doubt” and “at an outstandingly high level”. The realistic action is well supported by the realistic character designs and detailed representation of technical elements. The music is also praised, even if it distinguishes less “concise melodies” than more a “dense atmosphere”.
