Terrot R. Glover (born July 23, 1869 in Bristol , † May 26, 1943 in Cambridge ) was a British classical philologist .

Life

Terrot Reaveley Glover, the son of a clergyman of Scottish origin, grew up in Bristol and studied at the University of Cambridge from 1888 to 1892 . During his subsequent time as a fellow at St John's College (1893-1896) he acquired extensive knowledge of the ancient church fathers , learned Syriac and stayed in Berlin for research purposes.

In 1896 Glover received a call to Queen's University in Canada, which he followed. He worked there for five years as Professor of Latin . In the spring of 1901 he received an offer from St John's College to work again as a Fellow and Classical Lecturer . Glover agreed immediately and returned to Cambridge in May, where he began teaching in the fall.

During the First World War , Glover served from September 1915 to September 1916 at the Christian Association of Young Men in India, where he trained spiritual apirants.

In the summer semester of 1919, Glover was named Pro-Proctor of St John's College. In the following semester he was Senior Proctor (until 1920). In January 1920 he was appointed Public Orator at the university, succeeding John Edwin Sandys . Glover was also recognized abroad. He received offers from Queen's University (1916), McMaster University in Toronto (1918) and Yale University (1922, 1929), all of which he declined. He was an honorary doctor of Queen's University (LL.D. 1910), McMaster University (Doctor of Laws 1918) and the University of St Andrews (1921).

In the 1920s, Glover also made several lecture tours to the USA and Canada. For 1923/1924 he was invited to the University of California, Berkeley as Sather Professor . In 1939 he retired.
