Terence "Terry" Julian Forrestal (born May 13, 1948 in Chesterfield , Derbyshire , United Kingdom , † June 10, 2000 in Lysefjord , Norway ) was a British stuntman and actor .

Life

Forrestal was born in Chesterfield and attended Finchley Catholic Grammar School in north London. After the early death of his mother, he decided against a planned course of study and instead embarked on a long trip around the world, which took him to India, among other places. After his return, he began to study medicine, which he soon dropped out. Instead, he went to the Territorial Army in 1975 and later to the Special Air Service (SAS). Among other things, he was used in the Northern Ireland conflict.

After the end of his service, he turned to the film business and worked primarily as a stunt man and stunt coordinator. Forrestal has been one of the leading stuntmen in Europe since the mid-1980s. In addition to his work as a stuntman, Forrestal also worked sporadically as an actor. He took one of his best-known roles in James Cameron's film Titanic in 1997 as Chief Engineer Joseph Bell .

In June 2000 Forrestal died in Norway as a result of a base jumping accident on the Kjerag rock plateau. After successfully completing several jumps, the last jump failed and Forrestal landed on a ledge. He signaled to the accompanying helicopter that both legs were seriously injured. The mountain rescue service was looking for him, but had not been able to find him 10 hours later. Presumably in view of the approaching night and in the unclear about the rescue attempts, Forrestal jumped from the ledge. However, the height was too low, so that his parachute could no longer open and he died as a result of the jump.
