Terry Gou or Kuo T'ai-ming ( Chinese  郭 台 銘  /  郭 台 铭 , Pinyin Guō Táimíng ; born October 8, 1950 in Banqiao ) is a Taiwanese entrepreneur and head of Hon Hai Precision Industry , better known as Foxconn , who with over 1, 2 million employees, largest EMS provider worldwide.

Career

In 1974, Gou founded Hon Hai Precision in Taiwan , where ten employees made plastic panels for televisions . Its first factory in China , he opened in 1988 in Shenzhen in the province of Guangdong . Hon Hai Precision's largest factory is still located there today . Almost one million employees in Gous now manufacture electronic and computer components for Intel , Dell , Apple , Nokia , Samsung and numerous other IT manufacturers.

Gou owned 9.4% of the company as of April 2019. He was the richest Taiwanese citizen with $ 10.6 billion in 2017. Gous' leadership style is controversial. For example, employees are not allowed to speak to one another. Eleven employees committed suicide in the first half of 2010.

Gou announced in April 2019 that he would give up operational management of Foxconn, but would remain chairman of the board.

On April 17, 2019, Gou stated that the sea goddess Mazu had dreamingly instructed him to run for president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the 2020 election. Gou was a member of the Kuomintang party from 1970 to 2000 and rejoined it in April 2019. After losing the intra-party preselection for the presidential candidate in July 2019, he left the KMT in September after only five months of membership in order to keep open the possibility of an independent candidacy for the presidency. Just a few days later, however, Gou announced that after careful consideration, he would not run in the 2020 presidential election. On January 2, 2020, he declared his support for Qinmindang candidate James Soong in the election.

Private life

Gou's parents lived in the Chinese province of Shanxi until they fled to Taiwan in 1949 . Gou and his first wife Serena Lin ( 林淑 如 , Lín Shúrú ) have a son who works in the film business and a daughter who works in the financial sector. In 2005, his wife died of breast cancer at the age of 55 . On July 26, 2008, Gou married his second wife, the choreographer Delia Tseng ( 曾 馨 瑩  /  曾 馨 莹 , Zēng Xīnyíng ).

Since 2002 Gou has owned a castle near Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic valued at US $ 30 million.
