Terry Slater (born December 5, 1937 in Kirkland Lake , Ontario , † December 5, 1991 in Syracuse , New York ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach . In the World Hockey Association he coached the Los Angeles Sharks and Cincinnati Stingers teams .

Career

Terry Slater began his career in 1958 at St. Lawrence University and played ice hockey with the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his first season he scored 50 points in 22 games. After two more seasons at St. Lawrence University, Slater went to the former professional league Western Hockey League in 1961 and signed a contract with the Los Angeles Blades . In his only season he scored 17 goals, made 24 assists and collected 41 points in 52 games. In 1963 he continued his career with the Seattle Totems . In the same year he left the team and went to the Toledo Blades in the International Hockey League . After two years, 125 games and 106 scorer points for the Toledo Blades, he ended his playing career early.

He started his coaching career at the University of Toledo . For the 1967/68 season returned to the Toledo Blades and received a contract as coach of the team. Two years later he took a job with the Des Moines Oak Leafs , where he worked again as head coach and with the team twice in a row reached the qualification for the playoffs. For the 1972/73 season he followed the call of the newly founded World Hockey Association and became a coach with the Los Angeles Sharks . In his first season he made it with the team in the playoffs and failed in the first round against the Houston Eros . The following season he was sacked after 19 games, as the team played below expectations with five wins and 14 losses. For the 1975/76 season , Slater found employment with the Cincinnati Stingers , where he continued to work as a coach. In the first season the playoffs were missed, in the following season the team was eliminated in the first round against the Indianapolis Racers .

During the 1977/78 season he found a job with the Kalamazoo Wings in the International Hockey League, where he replaced Bob Lemieux as a coach during the season . He then coached the Colgate University ice hockey team in the ECAC until 1991. In 1990, he won the ECAC championship with the team. As a result, the team took part in the championship of the NCAA and lost to Wisconsin.
