Location requirements
Tetrodontium brownianum usually grows overhanging in hollows and crevices on lime-free, permanently moist sandstone . The species is more rarely found on other silicate rocks such as granite . The places of growth are in ravines and valleys with high humidity. Typical accompanying mosses are Diplophyllum albicans , Heterocladium heteropterum , Tetraphis pellucida and, in drier places, the light moss .
distribution
The species is widespread and occurs in much of Asia , Europe , New Zealand and North America . In Europe, their occurrences range from Norway to the Pyrenees and Turkey .
In Germany, the moss is mainly found in the colored and chalk sandstone areas. The main areas of distribution are the Palatinate Forest , Swabian-Franconian Forest , Northern Black Forest and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . Outside these areas the species is very rare.
