The Teufelsbadstube is a Rhätsandstein gorge west of Kalchreuth in the Central Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt in Bavaria .

location

The gorge is located about 1500 meters southwest of the municipality of Kalchreuth .

description

The Teufelsbadstube is around 500 meters long, up to 75 meters wide and up to 25 meters deep. The gorge is partly enclosed by weathered sandstone rock formations. The Teufelsgraben brook flowing through the gorge rises about 400 meters east of the Teufelsbadstube and is also fed by the Stephansquelle near the rock cellar . After about two kilometers, the Teufelsgraben joins the Röstgraben and then becomes the Eschergraben .

A small waterfall has formed in the upper part of the gorge . The water falls here over a layer of about 2 meters in depth.

Most of the gorge is overgrown and difficult to access.

geology

Teufelsbadstube, panoramic view, February 2014

About 200 million years ago, in the transition period between Triassic (Upper Keuper = Rhät) and Jura (Lias), there was a shallow inland sea in Central Franconia in the northwest and the mainland in the southeast. Fine-grained and sandy sediments were deposited in this sea , which later solidified into clay and sandstone. Since one cannot clearly distinguish which of the rocks are to be assigned to the Rhaetian and which to the Lias, they are called the Rhaet-Lias transition layers.

The landscape structure of the Sebalder Reichswald is characterized by a clear geological structure. The Rhaet-Lias transition layers occupy a relatively large area in the Sebalder Forest. From the mountain ranges of the Franconian Alb that adjoin to the east , individual ridges advance westwards towards the Central Franconian Basin. From Nuschelberg via Heroldsberg to Unterschöllenbach, the Rhaetian step is almost closed and varies in width. A large area of the Rhät moves from Günthersbühl in the direction of Lauf . In some places, creeks have cut deep into the Rhätfelsen, creating natural rock outcrops.

About two kilometers south-east of the Teufelsbadstube there is another Räthsandstein gorge, the Stettenberger Gorge .

Protected area

The area is designated as Geotope 572R001 by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . See also the list of geotopes in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district .

The Teufelsbadstufe is a near-tourist destination and is freely accessible all year round. Numerous hiking trails lead to this place, where there is also a beer cellar that is open during the summer months . Parking is available on site.
