Six local wineries are currently bottling wines under the name Texas High Plains. There are also a number of businesses that are outside the defined region and buy grape material from there and market them under the designation of origin. These establishments are mostly located near the city of Lubbock .

geology

The oldest layers of the plateau were formed towards the end of the Paleozoic about 251 million years ago. Towards the end of the Mesozoic , around 70 million years ago, when the Rocky Mountains began to form, and during the Cenozoic, when the elevation of the Rocky Mountains was completed around 30 million years ago, the overlying layers of the Llano Estacado formed.

During the erosion of the Rocky Mountains by the weather, more and more rubble was carried into the east-facing plains. The canyons and rock formations that border the Llano Estacado were created through erosion and new rivers .
