Thanik Lertcharnrit

Thanik Lertcharnrit (born in Khon Kaen ) is a Thai archaeologist and anthropologist .

Since 2006 he has been an associate professor at the Archaeological Faculty of Silpakorn University in Bangkok . Among other things, he gives graduate courses there on “ Basics of Monument Preservation ”, “Archaeological Method and Theory”, “ Field Archeology ”, “Quantitative Analyzes in Archeology”, “Analysis Methods of Stone Age Finds”, “ Ceramic Analyzes ” and “Research Methods in Archeology”. He has also led and directs various research projects.

Scientific career

During his studies at Silpakorn University, Thanik Lertcharnrit took part in the excavation team in 1983 as a member of the excavation of a prehistoric site in Ban Lum Khao , U-Thai Thani , Northern Thailand , under the direction of Surapol Natapintu and investigated a prehistoric site in Ban Na Lao , U-Thong , Central Thailand , led by Pornchai Suchitta . In 1984 he worked as a research assistant in the ethnoarchaeological studies of a hunter-gatherer group in Nan , Northern Thailand, under the direction of Surin Pookajorn . Also in 1985, he completed his bachelor's degree in archeology with honors.

Subsequently, Thanik Lertcharnrit worked for a short time from 1985 to 1986 as an archaeologist in the Department of Archeology of the Fine Arts Department in Bangkok and then moved - also as an archaeologist - to the Center for South Thailand Studies at the Prince of Songkla University in 1986 in Pattani , southern Thailand . As part of his activities there, from 1986 to 1990 he led the investigations in the ancient city of Yarang , Pattani. In 1993 he moved to the office of the National Culture Commission in Bangkok. In 1995 he was part of the surveying team for an archaeological survey project at the Center for Northwestern Anthropology at Washington State University in southwest Oregon (USA). In the same year he went as a lecturer at the Archaeological Faculty of Silpakorn University in Bangkok, where he has been active ever since. From 1995 to 1997 he was in charge of monument conservation research in Chiang Saen , Northern Thailand. In 1997 he graduated from Washington State University with his master's degree in archeology and anthropology. 1999 saw him as part of a further stay abroad as a member of an excavation team in Arizona (USA). In 2001 he received his PhD from Washington State University.

In 2001 Thanik Lertcharnrit was director of the Archaeological Field School in Sab Champa , Lopburi , Central Thailand, and in 2002 deputy director of the excavation of an Iron Age site in Pong Manao , also in Lopburi Province. From 2002 to 2004 he headed the research project “Late Prehistoric and Early Historical Socio-Economic Complexity in the Eastern Mountains of Central Thailand”. In 2003 he was appointed assistant professor at the Archaeological Faculty of Silpakorn University. The year 2004 also saw him as director of the Archaeological Field School of Silpakorn University at the late-prehistoric / early-historical site in Promtin Tai , again in the Lopburi province. From 2004 to 2006 he was then director of the research project "Archaeological investigation of a prehistoric settlement pattern on the eastern edge of central Thailand". In 2006 the Silpakorn University appointed him an associate professor. In addition to his teaching activities, Thanik Lertcharnrit continues to be involved in various research projects in a leading position.

Thanik Lertcharnrit is a member of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association (IPPA), the Silpakorn University Alumni Association (SUAA) and the Professional Archaeologists Society of Thailand (PAST).

Awards

In 2004 Thanik Lertcharnrit received the “Good Research Award” (German roughly: “Prize for good research”) from the Research and Development Institute of Silpakorn University and in 2007 the “Outstanding New Researcher Award” (German roughly: “Price for extraordinary new Investigations ”) from the Thailand Research Fund .
