history

The origins of the family are in the dark. According to a family legend, the Thaon di Revel came from the town of Thaon in Normandy , from where they first moved to England and then to Scotland . According to legend, members of the family followed Mary Queen of Scots to France and then back to Scotland in the 16th century , but a squire stayed on the continent and settled in Lantosque near Nice. The Thaon are proven there since 1454, where Philipp Thaon (1530–1623) commanded the local militia. His son Peter became the personal physician of Duke Karl Emanuel I and married Camilla Doria Michelotti, who brought in the Revel fief as a dowry ( Tourrette-Levens , Saint-André-de-la-Roche ). Karl Anton Thaon became the first lord of Revel, whose son Peter acquired additional areas in 1685 and in 1685 achieved that Duke Viktor Amadeus II made the fiefdom a county . Later on, Thaon became lords of Castelnuovo, counts of Pralungo. For his services in World War I, Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel received from King Victor Emanuel III. on May 24, 1923 the title of Duca del Mare (" Duke of the Sea").
