The Academy Is… was an American alternative rock band founded in 2002 from Hoffman Estates, Illinois , a suburb of Chicago .

Band history

The beginnings

In 2002 the singer William Beckett and guitarist Michael Carden met for the first time. They brought in bassist Adam T. Siska, second guitarist Adrian LaTrace Jr. and drummer Mike DelPrincipe shortly before the recording of the first Extended Plays (EP) called The Academy , which was released on March 23, 2004. This was released on the Chicago label LLR Recordings, which had previously released Williams' solo project Remember Maine with the album The Last Place You Look in 2002. The EP was recorded in Villa Park , Illinois at The Gallery Of Carpet studio with producers Brian Zieske, Peter Wentz from Fall Out Boy , who was very enthusiastic about the band's music and invited them to his record company Fueled By Ramen , where they were then signed her record deal .

When the first EP was released, the band only called themselves The Academy, but since there were difficulties with other established bands with the same name, they added an Is… to it and then called themselves The Academy Is… .

Almost here

In 2004 the band moved to Florida , where they should record their first album called Almost Here on the Fueled by Ramen label . After the recordings and a summer tour, the line-up of the band changed. Tom Conrad, who had previously played with a local Chicago band called 504 Plan, replaced Adrian LaTrace Jr. as second guitarist and backing vocals. Andy Mrotek, previously drummer at Last Place Champs, replaced Mike DelPrincipe.

The album was released on February 8, 2005 and rose to number 20 on the Billboard Independent Album Charts. The following summer, the band did their first headlining tour with Plain White T’s , Days Away and June.

In addition, singer William Beckett made a few guest appearances, including in the music video A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More Touch Me by Fall Out Boy, where he played a vampire leader. William lent his voice to the song Sophmore Slump or Comeback of the Year from the Fall Out Boy album From Under the Cork Tree . He also sang and starred in the video Bring It (Snakes on a Plane) by Cobra Starship alongside Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship), Travis McCoy ( Gym Class Heroes ) and Maja Ivarsson ( The Sounds ). The music video premiered in August 2006. The song was next to Black Mamba from The Academy Is… on the soundtrack of the film Snakes on a Plane .

In a blog on their official website, the band announced on October 26th, 2006 that Tom Conrad was no longer a member of the band, later Tom wrote on his website that he had finished with this band. He was replaced by the new guitarist Michael Guy Chislett.

Santi

During the Warped Tour 2006, the band began writing new lyrics for their second album Santi . After finishing this tour, the band flew to Los Angeles to finish the album there. It was published on April 3, 2007 and rose to number 32 on the Billboard Top 200 with 33,000 copies sold in the first week. The album reached number 94 in England . In the summer of 2007, the band went on the Honda Civic Tour with Fall Out Boy, +44 , Cobra Starship and Paul Wall , followed by further tours with Cobra Starship in Australia and Singapore . Their second headlining tour Sleeping With Giants with The Rocket Summer, Armor for Sleep and Sherwood took the band back through the United States between September 5, 2007 and November 24, 2007. They used the time between the concerts intensively to work on material for their third studio album.

Fast Times at Barrington High

At the Vans Warped Tour 2008, The Academy Is… presented the first two new songs About a Girl and Summer Hair = Forever Young . About a Girl was released as a download single on July 15, 2008 via iTunes . Summer Hair = Forever Young is the second single from the third album called Fast Times at Barrington High, which was released on August 18, 2008.

From October 1st to November 23rd, 2008, they headlined their Bill & Trav's Bogus Journey Tour with We the Kings in the United States.

Lost in Pacific Time

On September 22, 2009 the band released the EP Lost in Pacific Time: The AP . So far there has been a new sound with every new album by The Academy Is… that has always contained more alternative and less rock, so it is with Lost in Pacific Time . You hear less and less the electric guitars sticking out and the songs have a much quieter effect than the songs on the previous album Fast Times at Barrington High due to the somewhat different vocals .

On October 8, 2011, the band announced their breakup after 9 years.
