action

In 1597 in Korea of the Joseon Dynasty Admiral is Yi Sun-sin imprisoned and tortured because he was not able to identify a Japanese double agent in their ranks. However, he is promoted back to his post when another Japanese invasion is imminent. With 12 warships, Yi is faced with a Japanese fleet of 330 ships. Due to the size of the Japanese fleet and Admiral Wakizaka, Yi is looking for a suitable tactic. He found the Strait of Myeongnyang as a suitable place to meet the attackers. He uses currents to gain an advantage and defeats the Japanese fleet.

reception

For Justin Lowe of the Hollywood Reporter , the film heroizes the Korean fighters and shows the Japanese armed forces as ruthless and cruel. Choi Min-sik is not as good in the historical role as in previous films. Martin Tsai of the Los Angeles Times had a positive review of the film. The sea battles are epic and more realistic and exciting than in Red Cliff (2008) by John Woo or Master and Commander (2003) by Peter Weir . The editorial staff of the film magazine Cinema gave a thumbs up and described The Admiral as a “monumental cracker”.
