The Cakemaker (German: Der Kuchenmacher, Original: Hebrew האופה מברלין, ha'ofeh miberlin , German: The Confectioner from Berlin ) is an Israeli - German film drama from 2017 . The film is Ofir Raul Graizer's directorial debut and is the Israeli applicant for the Oscar for best foreign language film of 2019 .

Thomas is a baker who works in a small pastry shop in Berlin . Oren, an Israeli business traveler who is regularly in Berlin, walks into the pastry shop and the two fall in love. Oren lives in Jerusalem , is married and has a six-year-old son. Oren and Thomas meet in Berlin every month and spend a few days together. A year later Oren dies in a car accident in Jerusalem. Thereupon Thomas goes to Jerusalem and lets Oren's widow Anat employ her as a kitchen helper in her cafe.
