The Coast Guard is a 2002 film by South Korean director Kim Ki-duk .

action

The coast of South Korea is cordoned off and guarded by soldiers from the 23rd Coast Guard Platoon. When the overzealous soldier Kang mistakenly mistaken for a drunken pair of lovers for North Korean spies while putting the guard at night and shoots the man, he triggers a chain reaction: Mi-young, the dead man's friend and Kang himself go mad. The former becomes a company whore, the latter is dismissed, steals a weapon and starts a bloody campaign of revenge, to which one soldier after the other falls victim.

criticism

The film is considered to be one of Kim's weaker ones. The characters are too one-dimensional and exaggerated, the plot too garish. The word "pornographic" is also used. For example, the protagonist is forced to have an abortion and blood runs from her lap or she bites the head off a fish and superiors constantly beat their soldiers. In addition, the soldiers' conflicts are felt to be unnecessary in the second half of the film and more attention could have been paid to the girl and her transformation.

Awards

The film was shown at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2003 and won the FIPRESCI Prize of International Film Critics and the NETPAC Prize for Best Asian Film.
